Being a founding engineer at an early startup can change your life. These roles can have high risk but even higher reward.

We think there are many people that would be excited for these roles--for the right company. But that right opportunity can be hard to find, especially for very early companies without splashy funding announcements.

That’s why Kanjun, Josh, and I are launching “Founding Eng.” Every week, we highlight 3 companies we’re excited about and their founding engineer roles.

To nominate an early-stage company to be featured, ping me on Twitter at @RohdeAli.

This week, we’re starting with 3 incredible companies: HeadsUp, Bit.io, and Beacons.

HeadsUp. Location: Remote.

What they do, in 1 sentence: Identifies free-to-paid conversion opportunities, upsell opportunities and churn risk for product-led-growth companies.

Most interesting perk: Fully remote configuration, with periodic off-sites at 🏝️ exciting locations like Bali, London and Paris for the best of both worlds.

Who are they:

  • Founders Earl and Momo were early employees atFiscalNote ($1bn+ SaaS company) who built a version of the product in-house and helped scale the company to hundreds of employees. They’ve also worked at Google, Facebook, McKinsey, Amazon, and Airbnb and studied at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

  • They’re backed by revenue leaders at top B2B SaaS companies, including the CRO at Miro, Head of Product Growth at Webflow, Head of Sales at Sendbird, and VP Customer Success at Okta.

What they’re hiring for:

  • Product Engineer

  • Backend Engineer

bit.io. Location: SF or Remote.

What they do, in 1 sentence: bit.io is making data sharing easier through its shareable cloud database where users can share their data with anyone like a Google doc, query their data without worrying about compute or memory, and combine their data with a growing collection of usable open data.

Most interesting perk: Transform data in the same way GitHub transformed software and open source. Work on a remote-first team with 4-day x 8-hour work weeks.

Who are they:

  • Adam Fletcher, Founder/CEO. Adam has been building large scale systems for most of his life. Prior to bit.io, Adam was co-founder of Gyroscope, an ML startup acquired by BlueVoyant. Before that, he ran large parts of Google’s production network and YouTube’s video processing pipelines.

  • Jonathan Mortensen, Founder/CTO. Jonathan earned his PhD from Stanford in Biomedical Informatics and loves using data to drive decision-making. Jonathan has worked with some of the largest datasets in healthcare and cybersecurity. Prior to bit.io, Jonathan managed data science and data engineering teams at BlueVoyant, was CSO and co-founder of Gyroscope, and worked as data scientist at Nuna.

What they’re hiring for:

  • Junior Software Engineer - Backend

  • Software Engineer - Backend

Beacons. Location: SF.

What they do, in 1 sentence: Beacons works to create economic opportunities for creators, starting with a mobile website builder.

Most interesting perk: You’ll build and lead big parts of the product from scratch as one of their first engineers.

Who are they:

  • Neal, David, Jesse, and Greg. Neal, David, and Jesse are Stanford PhDs with deep experience in machine learning research. They believe that the future is more people building their careers around what they enjoy and who they are.

  • They recently closed a $6M seed led by a16z and with participation from Li Jin, Naval Ravikant, The Chainsmokers, Night Media, and others. They’re now making their first full-time hires.

What they’re hiring for:

  • Full-stack engineer
